Chorizo stuffed leg of venison with tomato, lemon and white bean stew

March 26, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

Right place, right time.

On Saturday following an excellent lunch at the Mark Addy, a riverside pub in Manchester that really is gastro, my friend Jon introduced me to the exec head chef Rob Brown. A lovely man who looks like he’d be entirely at home in a medieval banquet.

Pan-fried cod on tarragon puy lentils and wilted spring greens

March 18, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

We’re lucky enough to have an excellent fish mongers at the end of our road, and yesterday when I spied the chunky cod fillets in the window I knew I needed to create a dish around them.

Steak, Guinness and black pudding pie

March 11, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

It’s the end of national pie week, and on account of that, Mathew’s love for all things pastry topped and next week being host to St. Patricks day, I decided to revisit and tweak a recipe I’d put on the blog a while ago.

Italian style roast chicken

March 4, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

Spring chicken.

A fitting dish for the first post of March, the month where I stop hiding under a blanket and eating hearty comfort food and get excited about the days drawing out, milder weather, blue skies and all the glorious seasonal vegetables that are just around the corner.

Dark ale cottage pie with vintage cheddar mash top

February 26, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

What makes a good pie?

In my world a good pie has few aires and graces. It should be robust, bold, bubbly - a bit overflowy in fact (is there anyone that doesn’t love the scorched, chewy filling from the edge of the dish? Surely not).

Some Amsterdam Shenanigans

February 25, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

Racy, arty, foodie, friendly. Amsterdam is an incredible city. I love it.

It makes me feel excited just as much as it makes me feel at home. I can’t wait to return.

Smoky rosé veal goulash with caraway seeds and dill dumplings

February 12, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

If you want hairs on your chest, this is the dish for you.

Ideal for chilly weather and hungry guests. It may not have the finesse required for a dinner party, but for a boozy Sunday lunch with family and friends it’s perfect — providing just the right amount of comfort and being rather easy to pull off and impress with.

Poulet Basque

February 5, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

I’m lucky to have spent a fair amount of time in San Sebastián, the fabulous Basque capital, but that’s not where I discovered this classic dish.

It was actually introduced to me by my dad, who is without doubt the reason I am as adoring of food and cooking as I am.

Camembert, black olive and apricot tart

February 5, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

The whole Camembert was sat in the fridge, waiting to be eaten as I was waiting for inspiration.

Normally polishing off cheeses if a forte of mine, and my usual trick with Camembert is to bake it. Doing this is especially good after studding it with black garlic slivers, a coating of black pepper and a splash of white vino.

Toulouse sausages with roasted red onions, spinach and puy lentils

January 29, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

Can’t be arsed? Then this dish is for you.

Little time and effort and good quality ingredients make this a real winner. Make sure you use good quality stock and high meat content sausages – and if you don’t like Toulouse then swap them for a more simple herbed sausage.

Smoky Mexican meatball soup with Willies Cacao

January 21, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

Chilli con carne – one of my fave retro dishes.

It fits in that category because it makes me think of the 70’s (not that I was there) and growing up spending time at my grandma and grandpas, therefore giving it a firm place in my food history and heart.

Roasted pepper, tomato and red lentil soup with crisp chorizo and black garlic

January 15, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

It’s no secret I’ve been ill this week. I’ve tried to keep a lid on my moaning but let’s be honest, when you’re feeling rotten that can be a difficult task.

However, today I woke up feeling much better than I have been doing, and to celebrate this and my sore throat leaving me I decided to take a walk.

Prawn ramen with miso, homemade dashi and carrot noodle dressing

January 11, 2012 Hannah Pemberton

A noodle dish of epic proportions. Not mine specifically - I mean ramen generally.

If you’re a noodle addict (like me) you’ll know what I mean, this is one of the best noodle dishes you can get. It contains delicious umami flavour, slurpy broth and long and slinky and wiggly noodles all spiked with prawns and crab sticks, a bit of Japanese seven spice pepper and some greens. Food for me doesn’t get much more fulfilling.

Banana and pecan loaf cake with toffee icing

October 9, 2011 Hannah Pemberton

After three months at grandmas I can’t tell you how many cakes I encountered.

Every day I’d return home and there’d be at least one new cake to eat. Sometimes more than one. One day when rooting around in the ‘naughty cupboard’ I found six cakes. I’m not kidding – six.

Chinese chicken broth with five spice dumplings and rice noodles

September 3, 2011 Hannah Pemberton

Restorative and healthy food of the highest order.

When feeling a little run down (or in my case, like you’ve been overdoing things), chicken noodle soup really does hit the spot. But yeah, you might have guessed, in my world it’s got to be oriental.

Olive oil roasted cauliflower with feta and mint

Who fancies joining a food movement requiring little effort?

I’m convinced that this dish could rescue the cauliflower from plummeting popularity and sliding sales.

Courgette ribbon carbonara with taglierini pasta

March 24, 2011 Hannah Pemberton

First post of the year post work. I’m loving the nights drawing out, though the window of opportunity is still small.

I came home earlier in the week and cooked a Thai prawn soup and some sticky jasmine rice, it’s a quick dish but by the time it was ready to eat it was dark and I couldn’t take a decent picture, so tonight I knew I was on for a bit of a challenge to get this ready in time.

Whole poached chicken plus three dish ideas

January 9, 2011 Hannah Pemberton

It seems the poached Asian chicken recipe I posted over a year ago is the most frequently viewed entry on the blog.

Because of this dishes popularity, and of course because I love oriental food, I’ve decided to do another one in a slightly different way, and to show a number of different things that can be cooked from it. Hopefully this will please the thrifty, greedy and chili addled among you (and I don’t know about you, but I fall in to all three categories).

1. Cleansing ginger, chicken and Szechuan peppercorn broth with rice noodles

January 9, 2011 Hannah Pemberton

Now, you know I love noodle soup (I think it should be a food group in itself) so no surprise there’s one making an appearance here.

Szechuan peppercorns are very potent and clean tasting, almost mentholated, so they work really well with a big kick of ginger and green chilli, helping the chicken pack a punch in it’s fragrant liquor.
